Nowadays, when people have health problems, they visit doctors and some people get better at home by self-medication. Although for minor illnesses it is fine to get treated at home, i believe that this trend is largely a negative development because self treatment can lead to incorrect diagnosis and serious health complications.
However, a major advantage of self treatment is that you can save both time and money. For example, people suffering from normal cold, fever, headache, or stomachache can be treated by resting, drinking plenty of water and taking basic medicines. This can reduce the unnecessary visits to the doctors and the hospitals, especially when the symptoms are not serious. In addition, the widespread availability of health information on the internet can help people to learn about common diseases and to manage them.
In contrast, relying heavily on self treatment can cause serious consequences. A person who has no medical knowledge can misdiagnose the disease and its symptoms. For instance, what appears to be a simple stomach problem may need a proper medical intervention. Furthermore, taking medicines without proper medical advice about their dosage may result in severe side effects that will be fatal to health. Moreover, people may also delay medical attention because they believe that their condition will improve naturally, allowing the illness to become more severe.
In conclusion, although treating minor illness by themselves is time saving and economical, I believe that not visiting doctors is a negative development overall. People should be able to manage common fever or cold however, they must visit hospitals or doctors in case of no proper information about that disease, increase or unclear.
