In recent times, it is believed that accidents and traffic congestion are the challenges faced by many cities that are developing rapidly. In this essay, the reason why they experience this problem and its effect on individual that are traveling to work or study will be discussed before providing a concluding view.
First and foremost, the major reason why there are accidents and traffic congestion in a fast growing city is due to the fact that people violate traffic rules such as, jumping red lights. Simply put, it is a popular trend in some cities, that people jump a red light at a road interception. Many individuals do this when they want to save time or are late for a meeting or appointment and when one driver cross the red light, others would want to follow suit at a very high speed, therefore, causing chaos such as traffic jams. For example, a research carried out by the Federal road safety of Nigeria revealed that accidents and traffic congestion occur due to violation of traffic rules in many high populated cities.
Furthermore, accidents and traffic jams in a drastically increasing cities could posses negative impact on workers or students’ productivity by causing delays and stress. By this I mean that, when an individual is traveling to work or school and there is traffic congestion, people tend to be delayed on the road therefore, getting late to work or class which could affect their efficiency throughout the day. To illustrate, a survey conducted by the Lagos state civil service commission research that the major causes of lateness of their workers to work is caused by accident and traffic congestion.
In conclusion, the major challenges of any metropolis with rapid development are accidents and traffic jams because they violate traffic rules and the consequence on the masses are such as, delay and stress resulting in low productivity.
