Many people advocate the view that real-life communication was severely affected by social media platforms. I totally disagree with this statement, as I believe that social media creates opportunities for people to communicate more and connect with people all around the world.
Firstly, social media platforms help us to talk to others even without the constant need of being around. In other words, social media allows communication with peers, friends and colleagues through the distance, which provides an opportunity for people to stay in contact. Furthermore, the arrangement of different real-life meetings and events is a lot easier with social media, as sending a text into the group chat is a lot quicker than sending a paper letter to someone in particular. The prime example of it is Whatsapp, which caused an increase of frequency of group arrangements by 45% in Germany in the 2010s.
Secondly, social media is able to expand the world boundaries, as people from different countries and with contrasting cultures can connect and become world citizens. Forums, channels, apps like Instagram or Facebook, all of it opens a way for humans to interact. It especially becomes extremely helpful during adventures on holidays, because when we fly to another country, a few seconds on your phone can determine your hotel, future destination and overall plans. For instance, it became very practical in New York to text people on social media and ask to stay for a few days. Thousands of people are sincerely willing to help, which helps to unify people of different nations and backgrounds.
In conclusion, I do not agree with the initial statement and think that social media is a very useful tool for people to strengthen or create the bondings with other members of society.
