Band 5+: Tobacco, mainly in the form of cigarettes is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Over a billion adults legally smoke tobacco every day. The long-term health costs are high- for the smokers themselves, and for the wider community in terms of health care costs and lost productivity. Do Governments have a legitimate role in protecting citizens from the harmful effects of their own decisions to smoke, or are such decisions up to an individual?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Tobacco has become widely popular and recognized form of drug available in every nook and corner of the world. It is important to note the consequences and side-effects of the tobacco consumption. Starting from cancer, lung diseases and other health aspects are heavily affected. It is indeed particularly important to manage this issue in a delicate manner.

Tobacco, with its addictive nature, easily attracts massive population. Governments should take initiatives to publicize the harmful threats it poses to individual’s health. It can be in a form of limiting the supply, imposing heavy taxes, and implementing age restrictions. In addition, awareness should be made from the academic levels itself. It is to be noted that the influence by movies and artists should also be reduced. Banning the tobacco advertisements in any form would be crucial step in progressing towards healthier society.

On contrary, cigarette smoking is restricted to one’s individual choice. Also, one has the right to choose what they prefer to do with their body, at their own risk. It will be like poking a nose into one’s personal life. So, such decision on consumption of drugs should fully be based on individual’s decision rather than forcing with regulatory norms. But it should be made aware to the individuals about its long-term impact and the cost they are going to pay for it. But the individual should choose the right place to smoke without affecting the surrounding people through passive smoking.

In conclusion, Governments has the legitimate rights in protecting the citizens by following the suggestions as stated in the second paragraph. At the same time, an individual’s choice should be respected, and to be allowed with all the suggestions as mentioned in the third paragraph.
