Band 8+: Today more people put their private information (address, telephone and plastic card numbers) online to do their daily activities (banking, shopping, socializing). Is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The internet has revolutionized many facets of our lives, including communication, shopping, and money management. However, to use various applications in order to connect with others, make purchases, or transfer money, people are now required to provide personal details. While this development may facilitate better user experience, I believe the trend is negative as inserting private information on the internet allows for data collection, leaving people vulnerable to targeted advertising and online frauds.

Inserting personal information on the internet can create convenience for the user. Many online services, such as shopping platforms, use personal information to tailor their offerings to individual preferences that better match a person’s age, gender, and interests. This also applies to social networking websites. When people share their location, age, and other types of private information when signing up for the website, connecting with friends and family, colleagues, and other like minded people is likely become easier.

Despite these advantages, I view this development negatively. The most significant disadvantage is the potential invasion of privacy. Sharing personal information online can lead to unauthorized collection, use, or sale of that information, sometimes without the user’s knowledge. Facebook, for example, generates significant revenue from advertising, and its business model relies on collecting user data to target advertisements effectively. Even worse, putting private information online can lead to identity theft, financial fraud, and other forms of cybercrimes. Criminals may use stolen information to impersonate individuals, open fraudulent accounts, or engage in other criminal activities. This causes significant harm to the affected individuals.

In conclusion, although entering private information online can offer numerous conveniences and advantages, it comes with the significant drawback of privacy concerns. Therefore, I believe this is a negative development.
