Number of megacities and the total population have been rapidly increasing in recent years, so these trends are leading to an overpopulation, therefore causing a lower quality of life. This essay includes the causes and possible solutions for this problem.
Firstly, higher population density increases the country’s vulnerability to harmful events. Megacities are cities that have a more than ten million population in one area which means natural disasters and terrorist attacks can damage a lot more people than cities that have a smaller population. If two same bombs are exploded in two different countries, one with more population will get in a challenging situation. For example, imagine the countries are Ulaanbaatar and Bangkok. 1.5 million people will die in Mongolia, however, 22 million people will suffer from the same explosion.
Secondly, such countries will be greatly impacted by air pollution because of their excessive use of energy. It is certain that all of the population will need access to use electricity. Bigger power plants are needed to provide that much people need, therefore causing a greater greenhouse gas emissions. The population will breathe that toxic air.
These problems can be solved by various types of solutions. Megacities should increase their cost of living and carbon taxes. People will not hope for living in an expensive environment and carbon taxes must be paid by the users. Moreover, these funds will be allocated to decreasing the side effects by solutions such as planting trees.
In conclusion, since our use of energy and wishes to live in bigger cities have become one of the necessary needs. However, it can cause a number of problems such as air pollution and vulnerability. To solve these consequences, carbon taxes and cost of living must be paid excessively.
