In today’s rapidly changing world, scientific progress is widely regarded as one of the most pillars of contemporary civilization. On the one hand, some advocate that, science should primarily target exploring the universe as well as expanding the boundaries of lores. In my personal point of view, I strongly agree with this statement, that its essential goal should be to enhance human lives.
There are several benefits to sustaining the science field. Primarily and foremost, science has consistently transformed the way we live, work and cooperate. So, one of the most obvious instances is the healthcare system. Following this, scientific explorations have led to eradication to deadly ailments, particularly such as smallpox, the creation of life-saving surgical procedures, and the development of advanced diagnostic tools like MRI as well as genetic screening. At this point, these innovations drastically magnified life expectancy, and enhanced the quality of life for millions. Another argument related to globalisation, and science plays a vital role in addressing global challenges, peculiarly such as global changes, nourishment insecurity and water scarcity. Moreover, scientific advancements in renewable energy, such as solar panels and wind turbines, provide sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, which assist mitigate environmental damage. Now that, agricultural science has enabled the production of drought-resistant crops and more efficient irrigation systems, which are essential for feeding the growing population. In addition to physical well-being, science contributes to psychological and social health. For instance, research in neuroscience programs have promoted our comprehending of mental health conditions, such as sorrow, anxiety, and sufferings, leading to more effective statements. Hence, digital advances driven by scientific research, have boosted global communication, access to education, ecology, economy, mental well-being, and even political cooperations.
There are many nuances involving science in our lives. Initially, science utilized solely for individual progress, can sometimes be misused or even cause unintended harm. So, the same scientific knowledge that leads to medical advances, that can be exploited for creating biological weapons or even nuclear missiles and bombs in the military field. For instance, in the Russo-Japanese War, in 1902, the Japanese exploited biological weapons against the Russians, thanks to which the Japanese won the war. In addition, the case in Japan in 1945 during the end of World War II, the United States of America dropped an atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which murdered more than 1 million people. Therefore, scientific knowledge can be applied not solely for such purposes, however else for personal satisfaction and distribution.
Taking everything into consideration, while science should continue to explore the mysteries of the universe and promote academic freedom, I firmly believe that its primary focus should be on improving human well-being. This includes not only improving health and living conditions, but also addressing environmental, ethical and social issues. Scientific activity, guided by compassion and responsibility, can indeed be a powerful force for good. In my personal point of view, I completely agree with this statement, that its essential goal should be to enhance individual lives. Ultimately, after expressing benefits and nuances I crave to highlight my personal recommendation for decision-making this situation. At this point, if we constraint science to human-centered goals, we risk missing out on long-term breakthroughs born of intellectual curiosity.
