Band 6+: Topic: The rise of social media Question: Discuss the positive and negative impacts of social media on individuals and society.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, there has been a plethora of social media platforms in this modern world. People use them for many aspects of their lives, and these can have consequences for people in different ways. A lot of people believe that social media has bad impacts on our lives. However, I would argue that good impacts can be gained from social media.

There are two positive effects of social media: we can stay updated on the latest news and keep in touch with people even though they are far away from us. Social media such as Twitter and Facebook are two social media platforms where we can obtain news; for example, news about politics, sports, and entertainment. Moreover, utilizing social media like WhatsApp can make us feel closer to people even though they live in different countries. For example if we live in India, we still able to make calls and send messages or pictures to people who live in Australia.

However, social media also has bad impacts on our lives. To begin with, people tend to become solitary individuals. In other words, they will isolate themselves from others since they devoted to using social media. This would cause a detrimental impact on their social life, as they may not want to meet people and become busy with their own world or anti-social. Another negative consequence is people use social media to express themselves excessively. For example, they do not filter what they want to put in Instagram’s Story and other people can see it. These unfiltered stories or pictures that they post are sometimes inappropriate and pointless. This will also be detrimental to the user image.

All in all, although there are some bad impacts of social media, there are also positive effects. The utilization of social media and the impacts that can be caused by it depend on us as the users. If we use it wisely, then we can get more good impacts than bad impacts.
