Band 8+: Tourism does more harm than good to a country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s globalized world, so ubiquitous has traveling to foreign countries become that it is believed to lead to negative repercussions. Granted, some people argue that it harms indigenous lands; however, I firmly contend that this trend is a positive development overall, as it serves as the backbone of sensible approaches to maintaining the steady income of a government and developing the infrastructure of a region.

One major culprit associated with the proliferation of tourism is that it can result in the degradation of the local environment. By using more transportation and consuming more food, visitors are likely to enhance ecological problems, such as air pollution or the destruction of natural habitats. For example, tourists tend to commute to the wide array of sightseeing spots by means of private vehicles, so this phenomenon is an excessive source of exhaust gases that ruin the ecosystem. In this case, their arrival may well complicate the lives of country dwellers. Nonetheless, if a government promotes a green transportation link between foreigners and sheds light on potential causes, the risk of environmental damage would be alleviated.

Yet it should not be overlooked that tourism plays a vital role in acquiring profits which are allocated by a government to different aspects of life. The revenue may facilitate timely salary payments to employees of government sectors or provide students with scholarships. Without such revenue, authorities might struggle to afford essential public services such as free healthcare and education, while also making payments to individuals.

Another compelling argument is that there is an opportunity to develop the infrastructure of a region. The state strives to entice foreign visitors by constructing new cutting-edge venues like malls or entertainment centres. Consequently, residents would derive pleasure from attending these places as well. For instance, there are some cosmopolitan cities like Tashkent, where reaching a specific location is a time-consuming process. Thus, it may be easier for individuals to relax if each district has access to various places, namely shopping centres, concert halls, and restaurants. This is a noticeable factor in improving living standards and establishing more amenities.

To conclude, I acknowledge a valid concern regarding the development of tourism, which may negatively influence the environment. Nevertheless, I remain convinced that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, since this is a decent opportunity to generate profits for governments and set up a more convenient lifestyle for locals.

The increasing reliance on personalized AI tutors in education is becoming more prevalent. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

The integration of artificial intelligence has reshaped learning, bringing recognised benefits alongside serious concerns. While its capacity to enhance efficiency and access is well-documented, I argue that these functional gains do not outweigh the broader risks to student engagement, academic integrity, and educational equity. From a functional perspective, AI delivers substantial gains, particularly through personalised […]
