Band 9: Trade and travel would be a lot easier with a single, global currency that we all use. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Would a single currency cause any problems?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s world the idea of adopting a single global currency has become a topic of significant international debate. While the concept is not without its limitations, a unified currency has the potential to deliver far-reaching economic and social benefits.

To begin with, having one standardized currency would greatly streamline international trade by eliminating exchange rate variability. At present, global businesses face considerable uncertainty because fluctuating rates can lead to financial losses, disrupt long-term contracts, and discourage investment. A universal currency would remove these risks entirely, enabling companies to conduct transactions with greater confidence and predictability. As a result, cross-border commerce could expand more rapidly, accelerating global economic integration and fostering a more stable financial environment for both developed and developing nations.

Moreover, adopting a common currency would significantly enhance the travel experience for millions of tourists worldwide. Travellers frequently lose money through conversion fees, unfair rates, or repeated exchanges when visiting multiple destinations. A unified currency would eliminate these inconveniences, making international travel more accessible and cost-efficient. For instance, tourists visiting island nations like the Maldives currently face high exchange fees. Under a universal system, such expenses would disappear, allowing travellers to budget more accurately. Additionally, uniform prices would make global markets more transparent, helping consumers compare goods and services more fairly across countries.

Admittedly, a global currency could limit national governments’ ability to adjust their monetary policies in times of crisis. Countries would no longer be able to devalue their currency to stimulate exports or control inflation through independent interest-rate decisions. However, these drawbacks could be effectively addressed by establishing a well-regulated global central authority that ensures equitable policies for all member states. With clear rules on fiscal responsibility and economic intervention, such an institution could safeguard both global stability and national interests.

In conclusion, despite certain challenges, I am convinced that the benefits of a universal currency – especially regarding trade, investment, and international travel – far outweigh its potential disadvantages. With appropriate global governance and fair regulatory frameworks, the adoption of a single monetary unit could become a realistic and highly beneficial step toward a more integrated and efficient world economy.
