In this day and age, species such as the Tasmanian devil, the golden lion tamarin, and the panda bear are examples of endangered species. However, everyone can find them in zoos. According to this, these places are considered sanctuaries for these species, preserving them and promoting their breeding. Unfortunately, some zoos are concerned about money and not about preservation. For this reason, I believe these animal parks need to follow strict rules to be accepted in our society.
Overall, zoos are seen as areas that are responsible for protecting biodiversity. They receive people from around the world to show different animals. A few of them are focused on giving the best to the creatures. A good example is the San Diego Zoo, in the United States, which is known for its innovative exhibits and commitment to conservation. In this location, they prioritize the well-being of the animals instead of profit.
On the other hand, many zoos have a bad reputation for practicing poor animal welfare. The Tirana Zoo, in Albania, for instance, has been described as an “animal prison” due to the small enclosures and lack of enrichment for the animals. Based on these examples, the advantages of zoos will only outweigh the disadvantages when the animals’ lifestyles are in first place. The more eco-friendly the location is, the better it is for the species and visitors. When visiting a zoo, it is important to research its reputation to ensure that we are supporting an ethical place.
Finally, a zoo’s benefits are numerous, but it is important to have enough area for the animals, good food and available water, and places that imitate the species’ real environment.
