Band 5+: Unhealthy eating has a negative effect on both individuals and the society in which they live. Some people think that the government should tax unhealthy foods while others believe that a 'fat tax' is unfair and unnecessary.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is a known fact that the world is eating more unhealthy food than ever before. Some people think that a tax must be imposed in order to reduce these unhealthy habits. In my opinion, the government imposing tax on junk food is a sensible idea because every year many people die of heart attacks, diabetes and other obesity related diseases which are caused due to excessive eating of junk food.

In favour of these taxes, the government should implement these taxes as they are the reason for loss of productivity and illnesses which cost millions of dollars every year in medical treatment.People who are obese are also a greater burden to the society, for eg they need bigger spaces, greater portion of food, etc. Recently children are also seen eating these unhealthy foods which results in them getting early diabetes and insulin resistance, it also makes children overweight making them clumsy and lazy, thus resulting in less productivity.Excessively eating unhealthy food causes Fatty liver, which is an up and coming issue which essentially means fat around the liver which if gone unnoticed, causes liver cancer in the future.

There can also be many things said against imposing a tax on unhealthy foods. These foods are mostly brought and eaten by low income families as they are generally inexpensive and cheaper. Morever, it is said that eating fatty foods alone wont make u gain weight, it also has to do with the genetic factors and exercise.Imposing taxes sometimes doesnt reduce the usage as seen in ciggarettes and alcohol.

In conclusion,I think the government introducing a tax on unhealthy substances like junk food/unhealthy foods is mostly positive to make a well to do and a productive society, but many people will still continue to eat it disregarding the tax and will pay for it during the later stages of life.
