Weddings are becoming larger and more expensive. While the main cause is social expectations, I believe this is a negative development since it creates financial problems.
There are several reasons why people organize big weddings. One of them is the expectations of others. In other words, the organizers want to appear perfect and wealthy to certain people. They aim to impress their relatives and acquaintances by hosting a beautiful and expensive wedding. As a result, they may hold huge and costly weddings to show off. For example, the host family, such as the bride’s parents, may not want to appear inferior to the groom’s family. Consequently, they might choose to organize an extravagant wedding, even if it means going into debt.
Even though social expectations are a cause, I believe this trend is negative for one main reason: it creates financial difficulties for the newlyweds. Large and expensive weddings require a significant amount of money. Middle-class host families often spend almost all their savings on the wedding. If the money is not enough, they may take out a loan. A new family, whose income may depend on the host family, can face shortages during the first months because they have to repay the debt. As a result, both the host family and the newlyweds may struggle to live the life they dreamed of. For example, they may not be able to eat at fancy restaurants or travel due to a lack of funds.
In conclusion, the main cause of large weddings is the opinions of others. However, I believe this is a negative trend as it often leads to financial difficulties.
