In many countries, including America and Canada, people from different cultures live and work side by side. Although this cultural mix can cause some problems, I believe its advantages are greater than its disadvantages.
On the one hand, a multicultural society has some drawbacks. Firstly, language barriers can cause communication problems. Colleagues and neighbours may misunderstand each other, which makes it harder for them to cooperate. For example, a new worker who is still learning English may not fully understand a manager’s instructions and make costly mistakes. Secondly, some people may receive unfair treatment because of their background. This is often because certain residents hold negative views about other groups. For instance, studies in Canada have found that job applicants with foreign-sounding names receive fewer calls for interviews, even when they have the same skills and experience. As a result, newcomers may feel unwelcome, especially when they first arrive.
On the other hand, I believe the benefits of a multicultural society are more important, because they affect the whole community and last much longer. To begin with, living alongside people from various backgrounds gives everyone a chance to learn about other ways of life. Residents can share their customs, food and festivals, which helps them understand and respect each other. For example, in Toronto, people of many nationalities celebrate Lunar New Year and Diwali together, so these festivals become part of the whole city’s life. Furthermore, working with people who think differently can make individuals more open-minded. For instance, when a team has members from several countries, each person learns to listen to new ideas and question their own habits, so the team often finds more creative solutions. These benefits also increase over time, as children grow up with friends of many nationalities. Therefore, the next generation becomes better prepared for life and work in a world where cultures meet every day.
In conclusion, although a mix of cultures has some drawbacks, I firmly believe that its benefits are greater, because it helps people learn from each other and become more open-minded.
