Numerous people all over the world die from hunger each year and many more suffer from malnutrition. The food crisis is one of the side effects of the ever growing population of the world and as the population grows this problems will grows with it. Food shortage has attracted a lot of attention from the media to governments and more importantly scientists.Gm foods are a relatively new concept that can contribute to solving this problem, but one question that many people ask is whether they are safe or not?
I can understand why GM foods seem like a good option, you can enhance the food with minimal cost and maximum efficiency. This technology can be quite useful in many industries from agriculture to dairy production. Last year I read an article about a genetically modified apple that would ripen two times faster than the normal crop andwas designed in a way to contain the nutritional elements needed by the people of that region. We have all heard about how farmers use genetic engineering to enhance the milk production of cows. It all seems wonderful, but how does it affect people’s health? We do not want to solve the food shortage by creating a larger health crisis. This technology is new and not enough research has been done on its long time effects, hence we do not have enough information to consider it as a completely safe option.
In conclusion, GM can be an effective solution to the world wide health crisis but we should also beware of the factthat it is a new concept and we do not have enough data to predict how it will affect the population over a long period of time.
