With the advancement of society, the method of obtaining information through online platforms has undergone transformation. A considerable number of individuals argue that conventional print media is becoming outdated, and digital content presents practical benefits as a feasible substitute. This essay aims to explore the merits and demerits of this transition.
From a negative standpoint, there are various adverse consequences associated with the consumption of digital news. Firstly, prolonged exposure to light-emitting diode screens can directly impact physical health, especially eye health. While electronic devices have become essential for numerous tasks, excessive screen time may result in issues like eye strain and myopia. To exemplify, reports from eye clinics indicate that following the Covid-19 outbreak, many students in VietNam developed refractive errors due to extended use of e-books for academic purposes. Another drawback of this trend is the potential financial pressure on traditional news companies. If consumers increasingly opt for electronic publications, the diminishing demand for printed materials could drastically reduce the revenues of print media enterprises.
Despite the aforementioned drawbacks, I firmly believe that the advantages of e-books, such as convenience and cost-effectiveness, merit careful consideration. Choosing digital content can be a financially prudent decision as it eliminates extra costs associated with buying physical publications, like shipping and handling expenses. For instance, as a university student with limited financial resources, I personally experienced the financial strain of purchasing physical books in my first year; however, transitioning to digital formats led to a substantial reduction in my expenditure on study materials. Furthermore, the ease of accessing and reading materials online is a practical advantage of digital publications. Instead of waiting for days for the delivery of physical news, accessing online content is as simple as a few clicks.
In conclusion, while there are downsides to the shift towards electronic news, such as negative impacts on eye health and decreased revenues for traditional publishers, the tangible benefits of digital resources, including convenience and cost efficiency, outweigh the drawbacks. It is probable that online articles will witness growing prevalence in the foreseeable future due to these advantages.
