Positive And Negative

Band 8+: With the growing population of cities, more and more people live in homes that have little or no outdoor areas. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, many countries, particularly those in the developing world, have experienced rapid urbanization, leading to a significant increase in the urban population. Consequently, residential properties in cities are becoming increasingly limited in terms of outdoor spaces, such as gardens and courtyards, due to the scarcity of land in urban areas. From my perspective, this trend has predominantly negative implications as it can have adverse effects on the mental and physical well-being of individuals.

The absence of outdoor areas can have detrimental effects on individuals’ physical health. Human bodies require exposure to fresh air, sunlight, and natural light for optimal well-being. However, residing in cramped and densely populated urban dwellings deprives individuals of access to these essential elements, resulting in a decline in their overall health. For instance, the situation in Hong Kong exemplifies this issue, as the city’s limited land availability has led to a large portion of its population living in extremely congested and confined living spaces with inadequate ventilation and minimal outdoor areas. Consequently, the prevalence of diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, and cancer has increased in Hong Kong due to these poor living conditions.

Moreover, living in environments with limited or no ample open spaces can also have a detrimental impact on individuals’ mental well-being, thereby increasing the likelihood of developing mental illnesses. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated a direct correlation between exposure to natural surroundings and individuals’ mental wellness. It has been found that exposure to natural elements, such as greenery, floral scents, and birdsong, triggers the release of “feel-good” hormones like dopamine in the brain, thereby reducing stress and preventing the onset of depression and anxiety. Thus, areas with ample outdoor spaces provide individuals with environments that enable them to connect with nature, thus reducing the risk of developing mental health issues.

In conclusion, the consequences of urbanization have resulted in individuals residing in environments that lack sufficient natural outdoor spaces. Considering the negative impact this has on individuals’ physical and psychological health, it is imperative for governments to prioritize efforts to ensure that all citizens have access to abundant outdoor areas and improved living conditions.
