It is often contended that, with an increasing rise of remote work places, several global corporate organisations have started installing advanced digital software to keep an eye on employee work productivity and their digital activity throughout the workday. Although there is a need of such surveillance, it also causes various consequences in the contemporary workforce. My inclination is discussed in the ensuing paragraphs.
One of the major advantages of this is the need of constant validation to the manager whether the associates are working productively. This step is taken due to the attention fragmentation during ongoing work. Many employees consume passive content on digital devices and focus less on work which can cause harm to company’s reputation if something goes wrong. For instance, an intern at my university was always invested in watching movies on the computer rather than doing his work, due to which our authorities installed a CCTV camera in his compartment.
Moreover, it even assists to determine any crime or offense committed at the work place. One can get to know the person responsible for that. Also, due to this individuals will avoid them themselves from committing any theft. This can attribute to a safe and viable work environment.
Nevertheless, it also causes notable issues. It can serve as a factor of privacy erosion. Furthermore, it also leads to loss of freedom at work. Everybody has to stay well-mannered and sophisticated all the time which can culminate into brain drain. People tend to work properly in a fun and fresh nature. For example, a company with no surveillance has more joyful employees who complete their work at their own pace and covenience with no extra remarks.
In conclusion, although there are distinct problems due to the advanced digitalised workplaces like invasion of privacy, no freedom at work, its merits such as continuous surveillance for disciplined workforce and less committment of crimes are more significant.
