It is a school of thought by some people that educational institutions spend much of their time to teach theory and not spend time to teach practical skills. I highly agree with that view because the graduates are neither competitive enough to land a job nor they have hands-on expertise in their daily needs. In this essay, I will discuss the main reason for this negative development.
From high school to new graduate university students, they fail to posses the skills that they need in their daily lives. Most of the students fail to cook their own food, repair their own house or instruments, clean their own room or even file their own taxes. Because they were too busy to learn history and rocket sciences that they will barely need in their life. It is also seen that even though most students are smart with the new technologies, nearly half of the students do not posses basic communication skills or how to start a meaningful conversation. In the past school could rely on the parents to tech their children these skills, but as both parents become busy with their jobs, they also can not have time for their children.
When everything becomes easily accessible people tend to enjoy their time rather than developing a demanding skill. Cooking, repairing, washing demand a great deal of attention and patience. Individuals can easily order their food instead of cooking, buy a new product instead repairing or washing and they can enjoy their time in entertainment. Additionally, when schools are busy to train students to get higher grades, the pupils feel it comfortable as well.
It has become a trend that university graduate should go through some skills training before they can start their job search. And these skills training are mostly related to the basic skills that were expected to be taught at the school. In a survey with some HR, it has been found that 35% of graduate students lack of interpersonal skills. In few schools’ minimum mandatory community services are introduced as a part of the syllabus. Which would definitely help students their civic duty to the society, but will still leg behind to teach daily necessary skills.
To sum up, schools focus mostly on the education that students rarely use in daily life, and skip what they actually need. The students also find it comfortable to spend their time doing something else. A combination of both the students and schools interests to something unnecessary is responsible for that.
