Some people argue that social media has a significantly positive impact on people’s lives in terms of communication. Others claim that it severely affects social abilities, especially communication skills. I agree with the latter view because of the negative effects on interpersonal skills and the serious concerns regarding online bullying.
Focusing firstly on the advantages of social media, it allows people to communicate anytime and anywhere. Therefore, people can maintain connections with others through its use, for example, even after their close friends move to other countries. Moreover, unlike letters, which take time to be delivered, social media messages can reach the receiver instantly. Hence, it ensures that people can talk as if they were in person, even when they live in different countries.
On the other hand, communication through text can be misleading, which may cause conflicts. Compared to face-to-face communication, people find it difficult to understand what others are thinking online. As a result, it is widely recognized today that online bullying is a serious problem, especially among young people, who are heavy users of social media. This issue is a contributing factor to school absenteeism, and worse, even suicide. Additionally, social media can reduce opportunities to interact with others in person, which negatively affects interpersonal skills.
In conclusion, while social media benefits society in terms of communication, it also has the potential to cause interpersonal problems and impair social skills. Therefore, I believe that its disadvantages outweigh its advantages.
