Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 7+: Young people are often influenced in their behaviour and situations by others of the same age. This is called "peer pressure". Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate regarding the benefits and drawbacks of peer pressure. While many people argue that this psychological state can negatively influance physical and mental health of many teenagers, others reason that it can motive them to become a better person. This essay will discuss both views of the argument before explaining why I believe that its disadvantages outweigh its advantages.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that peer pressure can become beneficial in some certain situations. First and foremost, it encourages teenagers to step out of their comfort zone and nourish their personal potential. Without being pressured, many students might not focus enough on their academic performance and neglect their educational duties. For instance, many talented students consistently maintain the leading position in their class, leading them to become overconfident and ultimately fail their graduation exams. In this regard, peer pressure can serve as a motivating force, driving teenagers to compete with one another and avoid falling behind.

On the other hand, peer pressure also causes many detrimental effects that should not be overlooked. One major disadvantage of peer pressure is its negative impacts on students’ mental and physical well-being. Young students might be overwhelmed by assignments and examinations, which constinuously drain their energy and result in health-related issues. For example, teenagers who exclusively focus on improving their academic results can neglect their own basic needs, such as sleeping, resting, and entertaining. As a result, this can lead to numerous severe problems, including sleep deprivation, stomach pain, or paranoia.

In conclusion, although peer pressure can offer some particular benefits, its drawbacks regarding students’ overall well-being are far more significant. Therefore, it is important for parents or supervisors to pay attention to children’s behavior and intervene in a timely manner to prevent potential unfortunate incidents.
