Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 8+: Young people are often influenced in their behaviour and situations by others of the same age. This is called "peer pressure". Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Peer pressure is a common phenomenon among young people, who are often influenced by the behaviour and decisions of their peers. Although this can bring some benefits, I believe that the disadvantages of peer pressure are more significant.

On the one hand, One advantage of peer pressure is that it can encourage young people to improve themselves. When teenagers see their friends studying hard or developing useful skills, they may feel motivated to do the same. For example, a student may become more hardworking if most of their close friends take their studies seriously. In addition, peer pressure can help young people develop social skills and feel that they belong to a group. As a result, they may become more confident when communicating with others.

On the other hand, I believe that the disadvantages of peer pressure outweigh these benefits. One major problem is that it can encourage young people to engage in risky or unhealthy behaviours. Teenagers often want to be accepted by their friends, so they may follow others even when they know that something is wrong. For instance, some young people may start smoking or drinking because their friends do these activities. Another serious disadvantage is its negative effect on mental well-being. Constantly comparing themselves with their peers can make teenagers feel stressed, less confident and dissatisfied with themselves.

In conclusion, although peer pressure can motivate young people to improve themselves and develop social skills, I believe that its disadvantages outweigh its advantages because it can encourage harmful behaviour and negatively affect teenagers’ mental well-being.
