Band 7+: It is said that social media has negative impacts on children. What is your opinion about this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rapid rise of social media over the past decade has transformed how people interact with the community and the world. While these digital tools can provide many benefits for users in their lives, they are also feared to have negative effects on children. Although there are some valid concerns, I believe that the impact of social media on children can be both negative and positive, depending on how it is used.

One of the primary concerns regarding children’s use of social media is the potential for excessive screen time and high addiction. Prolonged exposure to social platforms has been linked to disrupted sleeping patterns, reduced physical activities, and diminished face-to-face interactions. Furthermore, some harmful popular trends and unattainable standards, which daily appear on these platforms, can damage children’s mental health and self-esteem if they try to mimic them.

Having said that, it is undeniable that social media is providing significant benefits for children. First, It can be a valuable tool for learning, providing access to many helpful educational resources, and giving opportunities for creation expression. Second, it also transforms the way young people communicate, helping children maintain relationships with their parents, especially during periods of isolation or long-distance studying or working. One more point, platforms like social media can also enable children to raise their voices on important social issues such as pollution, or climate change.

As the use of social media has both beneficiaries and potential risks for children, it is important to take proactive measures to mitigate these risks. This may involve setting strict time limits on screen use, promoting alternative offline activities, and educating children on the responsible and healthy use of social media. By taking a balanced and evidence-based approach, we can project the well-being of our children, and ensure that the healthy development of our children must be prioritized over the convenience and profitability of social media.
