Traffic jams have become a dramatic issue in the majority of urban areas. I believe that it is primarily due to the high number of cars on the roads and can be mitigated by taking measures to reduce that.
To begin with, one of the reasons there is congestion on the roads is mostly because of the poor quality of the existing public transit. The inconvenience of it along with the issues it has discourages citizens from using public transport, so they eventually have to turn to private cars for their own comfort. This increases the number of private cars on the roads, which leads to congestion. Simply taking steps towards improving public transport can be a solution to this. If the governments invest more into public transport and encourage the usage of it, more people will abandon private cars and switch to public transit. This will reduce the number of private cars and alleviate congestion.
Another leading cause of traffic is the increase in car ownership. This is mainly because the roads are not wide enough at all time to contain the ever-increasing flow of traffic. Due to this, congestion on the roads only increases. However, this can easily be resolved by limiting the usage of cars and imposing certain taxes. Rules such as one car per family or specific no car days could be introduced to reduce the number of private transport. Moreover, introducing car ownership taxes could also discourage citizens from purchasing cars. This would lead to a significant decrease in the number private transport and result in less congestion.
In conclusion, modern day congestion is caused by many different factors, such as the inconvenience of existing public transport and the high car ownership, but improving public transit and limiting the usage of cars can be a great solution.
