There is a controversial issue about the punishment for lawbreakers at present. Some people claim that all of them must be confined in prison. On the other hand, some people consider that there are better alternatives for those who have committed minor crimes, such as making them do work for the local community, and so on.
In such a developed and liberal society, individuals’ viewpoints about punishment for criminals have changed. In the past, almost all lawbreakers would be sent to prison to transform themselves. Nowadays, some citizens assume that the government can take more considerate measures to cope with crime.
With regard to the confinement of criminals, I believe that the existing regulations are valid and suitable for the current society. The lawbreaker must be sent to prison to be confined; this is a rigid regulation in the massive society, leaving no one challenging the laws. If lawbreakers do not have to be sent to prison, some of them will be subject to violations of the rules, meanwhile they tend to neglect the laws. Moreover, leaving them in prison can transform their baleful opinion and illegal habits. At the same time, they are blocked from society, eliminating the possibility of crime.
By contrast, making them work in the local community is an effective approach to improving the services of the community and reducing the harmful influence on them. Consequently,they can devote themselves to serving the community with a little freedom. However, this method will intensify the possibility of crime. The lawbreakers need not only the labour work punishments, but also ought to receive education. They can attain a better education in prison instead of the community. When they are exposed to society, they might hardly restrain the desire to commit crimes.
To sum up, I believe that the criminals should be sent to prison to receive transmation and education.
