Band 5+: Pollution and other environmental damage are caused by a country developing and becoming richer. This problem cannot be avoided. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is said that the development of a country is contributing to the environmental degradation, which is unavoidable. However, while I still admit that pollution and other environmental damages are the results of a country developing and gaining profits, there are still some feasible ways to tackle these problems.

Some people are in favour of developing a country as an unavoidable way of degrading the environment due to its exploitation of industrial materials and unmanaged sewage dumping. Regarding the former, developing a country requires a long process of industrialization and the construction of a large number of industrial factories. Therefore, along with this growing number, huge amounts of materials used for production such as oil and coal may come to the fore, leading to further need and exploitation to meet demand. Another reason is the uncontrolled waste management of some countries. This can be illusioned by the fact that millions of tonnes of industrial waste and toxic substances used for mechanization are dumped straight into the ocean without any reasonable treatments. This, in large amounts, unavoidably leads to water pollution and loss of marine biodiversity.

However, I still firmly believe that these problems caused by the process of developing a country can be avoided by some possible methods. The first one to mention is the allocation of money gained through industries into protecting the environment. Such investment into environmental-friendly or biodegradable materials may facilitate sustainable development while still preventing environmental damages. Additionally, an enhanced policy also helps a country develop and protect the environment at the same time. A new set of rules banning overexploitation of raw materials or some changes in tax policy on some unsustainable substances may give a country an opportunity to avoid damaging the environment while trying to develop and become richer.

In brief, although the development of a country can result in some environmental problems, there still exist some feasible solutions to tackle them successfully. I still hold the belief that an investment in suitable materials and a change in laws may come to the fore.
