Band 7+: some people believe that younger family members should be legally responsible for supporting older family members when they become physically and mentally and financially unable to look after themselves. To ehat extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The majority of people argue that younger family members should be legally responsible for supporting their elderly relatives as they become physically, mentally, and financially dependent. I completely agree with this viewpoin because taking care of parents is a moral duty in many cultures and having older family members at home strengthens love, unity and emotional connection within the family.

Looking after elderly parents is considered a moral obligation of their children, as the parents have played a major role in their children’s early lives. When young adults were children or even babies, only their parents who cared for them with unconditional love, forgave their mistakes, gave them everything they had, and always tried to make them feel happy and never left out among other children. Taking Uzbekistan as an example, almost all adult children live with their parents. Even if they do not, they still create a comfortable living environment for their parents, providing financial, social, and medical support. This is one of the most valued aspects of our culture and it is often respected by people from other countries.

In many cultures, the presence of elderly family members at home is seen as a source of strength and harmony. Living together with elderly parents contributes to financial stability, emotional well-being, and a sense of security, as their influence often brings wisdom, guidance and blessings to the entire family. Older parents usually help with daily decisions, provide valuable advice during hard times, and strengthen family bonds. Moreover, sharing a household reduces expenses such as rent, food, and childcare, making life easier for younger generations. For example, in many Uzbek families, three generations live in one house, which not only lowers the cost of living but also creates a warm, supportive atmosphere.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that young adults ought to support their older parents when they struggle financially, physically, and cognitively to care for themselves, children should take the responsibility of looking after them because it is a moral obligation of children and it also enhances love, bonds, and emotional connection within the family.
