Band 7+: Many countries import large amount of food from other parts of the world. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days, numerous countries rely on an excessive amount of imported food from foreign nations and there is a debate on whether this is a positive or negative trend. From my own perspective, even though importing food productions can be disadvantageous to a certain extent, I still believe that this is a positive development overall.

On the one hand, an over-reliance on imported food products may cause major disadvantages, chief among which is the heightened vulnerability of the nation’s food supply. To be more specific, solely or mostly relying on importing food from foreign nations may expose the country’s supply chain to potential stops and disruptions, due to fluctuations in the international food markets. For instance, natural disasters, such as droughts and tsunamis in export nations can lead to total loss of crucial crops, thereby making it difficult to import these food products and affecting the supply chains. As a result, significant disruptions and price volatilities in the importing nation’s food market are inevitable, which poses considerable threats to its people’s standards of living.

Nevertheless, I still believe that importing foreign food products is a positive trend. First, this can reduce the reliance of a nation’s citizens on domestic food, which is especially crucial and beneficial to regions where it is difficult for growing crops or those with limited agricultural resources, such as Middle East countries. Thus, it allows people to have easy access to food supplies, and minimize the dependence on an insufficient supply chain in several regions. In addition, imported food products might also enhance the culinary diversity of a country. To illustrate, importing a variety of food from different regions of the world to diversify the supply chain offers consumers a plethora of food options to opt for. Consequently, this allows consumers to enjoy a more fulfilling culinary experience.

In conclusion, although over-relying on imported food products might increase the vulnerability of a national food supply chain to fluctuations in the food market, I still contend that importing large amounts of food from foreign countries is crucial to regions where growing crops and grazing are challenging, and can improve consumers’ culinary experiences.
