Band 9: Some people believe that technology has made communication between people less personal, while others argue that it has improved communication. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern era, technology has revolutionised the way individuals interact, prompting an ongoing debate about whether this transformation has made communication less personal or enhanced it. While some argue that technological tools have weakened the emotional depth of human connections, others contend that they have significantly improved communication in terms of speed, accessibility, and efficiency. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting a reasoned opinion.

On the one hand, critics of technology argue that it has made communication more superficial and less emotionally engaging. Text messages, social media platforms, and instant messaging often replace face-to-face conversations, leading to a decline in meaningful interpersonal interactions. Non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language—essential elements in conveying empathy and understanding—are often absent in digital communication. As a result, relationships may feel less intimate, and misunderstandings can become more frequent. Moreover, the constant use of smartphones during social gatherings can lead to a phenomenon known as “phubbing,” where individuals ignore those physically present in favour of their devices, thereby weakening real-life bonds.

On the other hand, proponents of technological communication highlight the unparalleled convenience and global reach it offers. Technology allows people to stay in touch with friends and family regardless of geographic distance, fostering relationships that might otherwise fade. For instance, video calls and messaging apps enable migrants or expatriates to maintain close contact with loved ones back home. Furthermore, technology facilitates instant communication across time zones, which is particularly beneficial in both personal and professional contexts. For individuals with disabilities or those who are socially anxious, digital platforms can also provide a more comfortable medium of expression.

In my view, while technology may have introduced some impersonal elements into communication, it has ultimately enhanced the way people connect. The key lies in how technology is used. When leveraged mindfully, it can complement traditional forms of interaction rather than replace them. For example, a heartfelt video call can be just as meaningful as an in-person conversation, especially when circumstances prevent physical proximity. Therefore, instead of blaming technology, individuals should strive to use it in ways that preserve emotional closeness and foster genuine relationships.

In conclusion, although there are valid concerns about technology making communication less personal, its ability to connect people instantly and across great distances cannot be overlooked. With thoughtful usage, technology can serve as a powerful tool to enrich human interaction rather than diminish it.

I very much agree with the statement that governments are not spending their health budgets in the best possible way.
