Technology has become an important tool for communication and has facilitated interconnectedness across the globe today. While there are some people who believe that the advent of technology has resulted in better exchange of ideas, others are of the opinion that it has caused people to become more reliant on social media platforms and less on face-to-face daily interactions. This essay thus critically analyses both these views and presents the idea that, technology being a boon or a bane depends on how people make use of it as well as the extent to which people rely on technology to communicate.
Now-a-days the increased popularity of social media platforms like Instagram, Tiktok, etc has provided economic as well as social benefits to the society. It has not just helped in cross border communication but also created opportunities for people to work and study abroad. Through the cultural exchange of ideas and the freedom to express one’s opinion on these platforms, this technology has helped empower common people to influence various domains like politics, sports, etc. It has also led to job creation by bringing in a new field, that is, of social media management and influencers. For example, companies now have dedicated departments to manage PR and social media handles that make or break a company’s image. It is undeniable that the benefits of technology are vast and it has defenitely broken down the barriers to communication.
Conversely, the negative effects of technology are equally appalling. A majority of communication facilitated by technology is through social media which comprises a maximum of younger generation. As a generation born in the era of technology, one can increasingly see the extent to which kids these days rely on online friendships rather than actively seeking out others. There are higher number of cases of alienation and isolation with many people facing mental issues like depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies. Some influencers for example, instead of positively affecting people give rise to negative body images and underconfidence amongst people. The stereotypical image of perfection seems to have been normalised for youth today leading to them withdrawing and developing low self-esteem all while being behind a screen instead of being surrounded by kids their age. Additionally, a decrease in physical and outdoor activities is another drawback of this technology.
In conclusion, while technology has become an important way to communicate, it has to be used mindfully. A complete ban on technology in impractical. However being conscious about the usage of this technology and making active efforts to control it while seeking out human interaction simultaneously can help prove that technology is a boon rather than a curse.
