Band 8+: Some people believe genetic engineering is a positive development that can improve human life. Others think it poses serious risks to society. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued by many people that genetic modification can bring benefits to human lives. However, others believe that it can negatively impact societal life. In this essay, I will discuss both views before presenting my own opinion.

To begin with, scientists continue to develop genetic engineering projects for medical purposes, preventing individuals from dangerous genetic disorders and diseases. This is because they think that genetic manipulation can significantly enhance human fitness in general, eradicating illnesses that have been suffered by many during their lifetimes. Some deadly diseases, such as cancer and Down syndrome, have not been addressed or cured to this day. By applying genetic engineering technology, scientists can intervene, preventing people from the possibility of getting cancer and other serious diseases. In addition, genetic manipulation intervention, particularly when implemented on plants and animals, can resolve the issue of food scarcity in many underdeveloped countries or societies, such as Africa. Several countries in Africa, including Ethiopia and Sudan, have applied such technology in agriculture. As a result, it not only preserves the biodiversity of plants but also increases the productivity of farming, preventing people from hunger and undernourishment.

By contrast, opponents believe that such technology and projects might lead scientists to play God, positioning themselves as powerful, God-like men over others. They argue that, ethically, the natural law cannot be violated, even if scientists are able to do it. In addition, they argue that genetic manipulation can lead to societal discrimination when certain individuals are designed to be perfect , while others are not. For instance, several wealthy artists or politicians can pay for a genetic engineering project and transform their children’s genes, while those with low incomes might not . This can lead to social discrimination, even racism. Furthermore, although the medical purpose is the first goal of using this technology, it is now commodified by several big corporations to earn more money, leading to societal economic inequality.

In conclusion, I think that the benefits of genetic manipulation for human welfare should be enhanced properly, but we should control its downsides to prevent humanity issues, racism, social discrimination, or, to put it bluntly, ethical considerations.
