Band 8+: Some people believe that young offenders should be treated the same as adults when they commit serious crimes. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The debate regarding whether young offenders should be subjected to the same penal measures as adults when they commit serious crimes has generated significant discourse. In my view, I strongly advocate for this approach for two primary reasons, which I will elaborate upon in the following paragraphs.

Firstly, one of the most compelling arguments for treating juvenile offenders in a manner commensurate with adults is the potential to deter criminal behavior. Individuals with a predisposition towards violence often find it exceedingly challenging to alter their hostile mindset, as it is deeply rooted in their subconscious. Consequently, if the legal system does not impose stringent penalties on young offenders, there exists a heightened risk of recidivism, thereby exacerbating societal problems related to crime. For instance, a survey conducted by the Philippine National Police uncovered that the recidivism rate among juvenile delinquents who escaped rigorous punishment stood at 43% over the last decade. This underscores the notion that subjecting young individuals who engage in serious criminal activities to the same legal repercussions as adults may serve as a powerful deterrent, fostering a safer and more equitable society.

Furthermore, the failure to impose appropriate penalties based on age may inadvertently endorse juvenile criminality. Many severe offenses are executed with premeditation by young offenders, who exhibit an understanding of the consequences of their actions. This tendency is substantially influenced by the knowledge that their illegal activities may result only in minimal sanctions or mere observation by law enforcement authorities. A poignant example is the case of a 16-year-old girl from Incheon, South Korea, who was acknowledged as being aware of her actions when she committed the murder of an 8-year-old child. She expressed her intention to challenge the inadequacies of the country’s juvenile justice system. Therefore, to effectively reduce the incidence of crime, it is essential to adopt disciplinary measures for young lawbreakers that are on par with those applied to adults.

In conclusion, I reiterate my conviction that treating juvenile offenders similarly to adults in cases of serious crimes is not only justified but also imperative. This approach not only heightens awareness regarding the implications of criminal behavior but also contributes to the overall quality and safety of society
