Overall, the world population experienced a substainal rise over a century, with Asia consistently having the greatest number of inhabitants. It is worth noting that a new region, the Middle East and North Africa, emerged in 2000.
During the 100-year period the proportion of people in Asia relative to the whole world slightly dropped from 60% to 54%, yet it remained as the leading region in terms of overall population. Europe and Russia’s figures also declined in 2000, from 25% to 14%. The number of inhabitants in North America in terms of global population remained constant over 100 years in 5%. Both Africa and Latin America saw growth, increasing from 4,5% to 10% and from 3% to 8% respectively. The newly registered area, th Middle East and North Africa, consisted of 6% of global population. Other regions, apart from the most significant ones, had 2,5% and 3% of the total number of people on earth in years 1900 and 2000 respectively.
