The figure increased steadily initially, reaching 1.5 million in 2012. then, there was a rise in visitors’ numbers in the following two years, with the data remaining relatively unchanged between 2015 and 2016. However, the year after, tourist population experienced a sharp increase, rising to 3.5 million from around 2.75 million.
The number of individuals staying on the island was lower compared to those staying on ships. However, it experienced a higher rate of growth and eventually surpassed the number of visitors staying on ships by the year 2016. The number of individuals staying on the island increased by approximately 1.75 million over the 8-year period. In contrast, while the number of visitors staying on boats also increased due to the overall rise in population size, the growth was relatively small at only 0.75 million.
