Band 6+: Some schools have replaced traditional books with tablets and laptops. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this change.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years many schools have replaced books with gadgets like tablets and laptops. This move changed teaching methods. This essay will be about both the advantages and disadvantages of using tablets and laptops instead of books.

To begin with the advantages. The first one is portability and usability. Only one student can easily have thousands of books, learning materials, which makes it easier for students to carry their entire curriculum without heavy bags. For example: a learner no longer needs to carry separate books for each subject—everything is accessible on a lightweight tablet. Another benefit is that those gadgets are good for the environment. If a student brings his laptop, he doesn’t need any paper book. For instance, he doesn’t need to waste paper by writing a lesson on it, that means, he saved a part of the tree by that move. And if every student will do it, we can save more trees.

Nevertheless, using electronic devices in schools brings problems called high initial cost. Tablets and laptops are expensive, and schools need good Wi-Fi and power outlets for charging devices. Such as, the whole class had brought only their laptops. Suddenly, in the second lesson, the Wi-Fi went down throughout the entire school. Therefore, no one can continue to learn new material, so they just go home.

Moreover, health issues are also the disadvantages of using gadgets. Long screen time can cause eye strain and headaches. For example, one student had learned all of the lessons, materials, only with his laptop, while sitting too close to the screen. Soon, after 5 months he went to an ophthalmologist. Doctor had written that the patient’s vision deteriorated by 30 percent, as a result of which the student had to buy glasses, and now he only uses them when working on his laptop.

In conclusion, replacing books with tablets and laptops brings benefits such as portability and environmental care, but also there are disadvantages, like cost, and health problems. So, schools should think carefully about these points to make sure that technology helps students learn, without hurting their budget or health.
