Overall, the amounts of waste thrown into landfill and burnt increased significantly, while the figure for dumped in sea witnessed an upward trend. Despite this, the level of rubbish disposed in landfill was the highest among three methods.
In 2005, the amount of trash disposed into landfill started at 70 million tonnes, before gradually decreasing by 10 million tonnes in the next three years, and ending the period at 40 million tonnes in 2008. A similar trend was witnessed in the quantity of waste burnt, which gradually decreased from 65 million tonnes to 60 million tonnes between 2005 and 2006. After that, this figure saw a significant decline by 20 million in 2007 followed by a surge to 2005 levels in 2008. 2008 is the only year burning treatment exceeded landfill method, with the values of 40 million tonnes and over 60 million tonnes, respectively.
At the beginning of the given period, the quantity of waste dumped in ocean was approximately 55 million tones, then it went down slightly by 5 million tonnes in 2006 and 2007, prior to dropping to 40 million tonnes in 2008, making it the least popular choice for waste disposal’s method
