In 2008, Europe held the highest number of global car sharing, at approximately 60%. This was nearly twice the percentage seen in North America, where around 30% of car sharing schemes were observed. The other continents- each had an initial share of less than 5%.
In 2016, car sharing programs in North America saw a sharp rise, reaching more than 50% of global use. The remaining regions, including: South America, Australia and Asia, just grew slightly to 4%,5% and 6%, respectively. Conversely, in terms of Europe, its figure still ranking second despite a significant decline to a mere 34%.
