The following bar graph exhibits useful information about some distinct leisure activities including the zoo, library, theatre, and cinema engaged by three varied individuals: native Australians, the migrants who recently arrived from English-speaking countries, and the new immigrants coming from countries where their first language is not English.
The cinema is by far the most popular free-time activity listed in the chart for those whose first language is English. – 70% of Australians and 65% of the English-speaking migrants. Half the immigrants from non-English countries go to see a film but interestingly, 5% more of this group prefer the library to the cinema. Roughly 40% of the other two groups spend their time in the library.
Zoos are visited by half of the English-speaking migrants compared to just over 40% of Australian citizens and approximately 35% of the new immigrants born where English is not widely spoken. Moreover, the theatre is least popular for all concerned, with only 10% of the non-English migrants attending, while double the number of native Australians go to see a play. A quarter of those born in English-countries are theatre-goers.
Overall, it is perhaps unsurprising that Australians prefer the cinema to the theatre, but the popularity of the library with new migrants may reflect the financial circumstances of these new citizens.
