The pie charts illustrate the percentage of energy capacity in gigawatts (GW) between 2015 and as projected for 2040. Overall, the shares of solar and wind are expected to expand, while the reversal pattern will be observed in the remaining categories. Although displaying a downward trend, the proportion of fossil fuels was dominant in both years.
Starting with increases first, solar and wind will grow considerably, albeit at varying degrees. Solar recorded the smallest share among others, standing at 2% in 2015, but its proportion is projected to go up to 18%. Similarly, there will be a significant growth in the proportion of energy capacity in wind, from 5% to 12%.
In contrast, the figures for the remaining categories are expected to go down, with fossil fuels declining by the highest percentage point.Starting at 23% and 6%, the share of other renewables and nuclear will shrink to 21% and 5%, respectively. When it comes to fossil fuels, their proportion is expected to drop by 20 percentage points, from 64% to 44%, while still accounting for the largest share.
