The bar graph above portrays the results of two surveys carried out in two different years, 2003 and 2023, which is a 20 year gap. The aim of the survey was to find out the reason behind students choosing to study at a specific university.

Firstly, let us discuss about the results of the survey in 2003. The most common reason for a university to be chosen is due to the programs offered, which consisted of 35% of the students’ choices. The second most popular factor that drove students to select a certain university was due to an institution’s academic repution, containing 21% of students. Some less prominent yet still fairly pervasive determinants are networking and alumini connections, recourses, financial considerations, and locations. The student percentages who pick their universities due to these are 14%, 13%, 11% and 7% respectively. There are also some uncommon yet still taken into account reasons such as diversity and inclusion as well as campus life, with both of them consisting less than 5% of students.

Next, let us talk about the findings from the 2023 survey. Unlike in 2003, in 2023, programs offered have become a less important determinant for students, having only 11% of students who take it into consideration when selecting a university. Instead, the most dominant catalyst is due to acedemic reputation, which involves 23% of students, just slightly above how it was in 2003. There are also other variables that have increased and decreased in 2023 from 2003. Among the other factors which have gained recognition from 2003 are networking and alumini connections, recourses, diversity and inclusion and campus life. Their student percentages increases are 2%, 9%, 14% and 15% correspondingly. Between the other factors which have declined in prominence are financial considerations and location. Their percentages decreases are 8% and 4% in order.

Therefore, we can conclude that university students in 2023 are different than they were in 2003.Among factors to take into account when deciding on a university, some such as campus life and recourses have become more valued, whereas others such as programs offered are considered of less importance.
