Band 6+: In spite of advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. Why is this the case? What can be done about this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Food insecurity is increasingly becoming common among certain demographics of society. Despite the advancement in agriculture, many people worldwide are suffering from hunger. This essay will discuss that the primary reasons for this situation are poverty and high costs of food. The measures that can be taken to ensure that people have access to enough food include economic growth and availability of affordable yet healthier foods.

The worsening situation of hunger is prevalent due to destitution and increased food prices, despite advancements in agricultural technologies that have improved food output. An increasing number of people spend their lives with wages below the level sufficient to access three meals a day and fulfill their basic needs. In Pakistan, for instance, millions of people earn salaries less than $5 per day, remarkably below the standard set by human rights organizations. Another contributing factor is the cost of food, which an average person cannot afford. This is because it takes a large amount of investment to yield crops, so farmers sell food at their desired costs, resulting in increased prices in the market. For example, in Europe, many people prefer to buy processed food instead of organic options due to its price. In short, these reasons contribute to the spread of hunger, which can be dangerous for society.

While these issues may seem intractable, there are solutions available. The first solution is to provide jobs to unskilled workers and pay increments. This initiative would result in enabling them to eat food regularly without suffering from starvation. To illustrate, Saudia Arabian government has fixed the salary of labour workers and no employer can violate this decree. Another approach is that government should enact a law preventing farmers selling food on high prices. This step would result in fair distribution of food across the world. For example, many European countries have strict guidelines for selling products to markets in order to facilitate their people. These reforms alleviate the world’s challenging hunger situation.

In conclusion, advances in agriculture had no positive effect on hunger issues in the world. Impoverishment and pricy foods are the major contributing factors in this regard. Potential solutions to these problems are developing economy and decreasing the cost of food
