It is predicted that in the future, all vehicles will be driverless, with only passengers inside. I believe that the benefits of having only driverless vehicles will outweigh the drawbacks.
On one hand, having only driverless cars may present some drawbacks. A particular disadvantage is the sense of reduced self-worth that people may feel, as skills they have learned in the past, such as driving, are no longer needed. Many men, for example, do not see driving their families as an energy-consuming task, but rather as a duty they take pride in. No longer needing to fulfill these duties may cause some men to lose confidence in themselves, and their role within the family may diminish as a result. Furthermore, it should also be noted that people might become lazier, as driverless cars will eliminate the need for tasks such as driving to work or school. This trend could potentially lead to an increase in laziness among adults, with one of the most predicted consequences being higher rates of obesity, since fewer physical tasks—such as driving, maintaining vehicles, or other responsibilities—will be required.
Nevertheless, the advantages of driverless vehicles are significantly greater. One of the most notable benefits is the potential to reduce traffic accidents. Currently, traffic accidents are a major issue in many countries, especially in densely populated cities where car usage is high. Human error on the roads is responsible for a significant number of accidents each year, and as more people drive, the number of accidents increases. In contrast, robots or AI systems are programmed to be precise, and their automatic actions could reduce the number of accidents. Additionally, while people may no longer need driving skills—potentially a drawback—this shift will bring other advantages. For instance, spending hours in traffic is a significant source of stress for many people, which can negatively impact their health. The use of driverless cars will reduce this stress, improving overall well-being.
Although there are some challenges associated with driverless vehicles, I believe that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
