Band 9: Some people think governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems to help people prevent illness and disease. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

In recent years, the connection between living conditions, environmental pollution, and public health has become increasingly evident. While there are many ways to improve a nation’s overall well-being, I strongly believe that governments should prioritize tackling environmental and housing issues, as these are fundamental determinants of human health.

To begin with, environmental pollution is one of the most serious threats to public health in the modern world. Industrial waste, vehicle emissions, and the overuse of plastic have severely contaminated air, water, and soil, leading to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and even cancer. For instance, a 2022 WHO report revealed that air pollution alone causes approximately seven million premature deaths each year. Therefore, stricter regulations on industries, investment in renewable energy, and the promotion of public transportation could dramatically reduce these health risks and enhance the quality of life for millions of citizens.

Furthermore, inadequate housing conditions also play a crucial role in the spread of disease. Overcrowded neighborhoods with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water often become breeding grounds for infections. Governments should, therefore, invest in affordable housing projects that ensure basic facilities such as proper ventilation, sewage systems, and waste disposal. When citizens live in safe, hygienic environments, they are less likely to fall ill, which in turn reduces pressure on healthcare systems and increases productivity.

Critics may argue that improving healthcare infrastructure and promoting medical research are more immediate ways to prevent illness. While these measures are indeed important, they treat the consequences rather than the causes of disease. A cleaner environment and healthier living conditions address the root of the problem, making them more sustainable long-term solutions.

In conclusion, I firmly agree that reducing pollution and improving housing should be top priorities for governments aiming to prevent illness and disease. By focusing on these areas, authorities can create healthier societies, lower healthcare costs, and promote a better quality of life for all citizens.
