Band 9: Information on percentage of male smokers globally and in seven countries (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample)

This provided bar graph illustrates the percentage of adult male smokers in seven different countries compared with the world average in 2000 and 2015. According to the graph, the seven countries are Armenia, Egypt, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Cuba, Mexico, and Australia.

Overall, after analyzing the given graph, it can be seen that over the span of 15 years, the number of male smokers decreased in all the countries except for Egypt and Lebanon, where the number increased. It can be noted that only Mexico and Australia were below the world average in 2000 and 2015.

To begin with, in 2000, the ratio of male smokers to the male populaion in Armenia was nearly double that of Egypt and Lebanon, reaching approximately 66%. In addition, the percentage of smokers in Bangladesh was 10% higher than that of smokers in Cuba (62% and 52%, respectively).

Moving on, in 2015, the percentage of smokers in Bangladesh decreased substantially, reaching 39% of the total male population.

Similarly, the percentage of male smokers in Mexico in 2015 was half the percentage in 2000. However, the number of smokers in Egypt increased, reaching 50% of the male population.
