Band 5+: Some people believe that the development of technology, especially communication via computers and mobile phones, has a negative effect on people's reading and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the recent times, it is observed that, modern communication technologies has a negative impact on people’s reading and writing skills. From my end I firmly agree with a view that, the uses of modern communication has had a negative impact because it encourages people to use informal wat of language.

To begin with, the young students from this generation are more comfortable using social chatting apps. Such as, messenger, whatsapp,Instagram etc. In general people does not maintain grammars while having a chat. Additionally, most of them use many abbreviations for instance, ‘n8’ instead of night or ‘brb’ in lieu of ‘be right back’. Which causes bad spelling while writing something in the traditional way. Moreover, the autocorrection and auto suggestion of words does not make them realize if the write something wrong. Therefore, they keep suffering from writing problems.

Besides, in this generation of technological development most of the teenagers spend a plenty of time playing video games on their handset or computer. Rest of them passes the free time sending sms to their friends. Reading books or any written material for mental refreshment has become an ancient method to them. They barely read books for pleasure. Instead, they only read their academic books only to pass in the examination. This decreased number of student’s who read books Is significantly affecting the quality of graduates nowadays.

To sum up with, I strongly believe that the uses of modern technology for communication has a serious negative impact in young people’s reading and writhing skills.
