The provided table depicts the rate in which undergraduates of an Australian university study in 2009 according to various departments.
Overall, language and historical studies were the more favored subjects by female students as opposed to Physics, Chemistry and Maths. In addition, non-native Australian and English speaking students were more prevalent in scientific subjects, as well as modern languages.
Regarding social and linguistic fields, English claimed the highest gender disparity, with 67% belonged to female academics, followed by Modern languages and History. Conversely, the largest percentage of students using English as secondary language and born outside Australia could be seen in modern languages department, which were 41% and 54% respectively, twofold as in English department.
In terms of scientific subjects, most departments had their students’ gender ratios incline to male ones by 8% to 21%. Likewise, while the proportion of students not native English speakers in all three subjects ranged between 32% and 38%, the percentage of students from other countries than Australia varied at around 45% for both Maths, Chemistry and Physics.
