The table gives information about different types of students studying at a university in Australia, namely females, those whose first language isn’t English, and those born outside Australia, in the year 2009.
Overall, females recorded the highest proportion in all departments with the exception of math and chemistry, while the reverse was true for non-native English speaking students. Notably, students not born in Australia were attracted to physics and math.
Looking at the table in more detail, among females, English is the most popular subject, at 72%, followed by Modern languages at 68%. History, physics, and math showed significantly lower shares, accounting for 52%, 56%, and 17% respectively. Math, in turn, was the least popular department, at 15%.
Among non-native English speaking students, math held the leading position, followed by history and chemistry, at 49%, 45%, and 42% respectively. The shares of English and modern languages constituted 12% and 16% respectively, making them the lowest figures in the table.
Students who were born outside Australia were more engaged in math and physics, at 56%. Following some way behind were chemistry and history, at 48% and 31% respectively. As for English, it took up only 20%.
