The line graph shows the number of shop closures and new shop openings in a particular country from 2011 to 2018.
Overall, it can be seen that the number of shop closures and business shutdowns was higher than the number of new openings in most years. The only exception was in 2014, when the two figures were almost the same.
In 2011, about 5,000 shops closed, while just under 2,000 new shops opened. In 2012, the number of business shutdowns increased sharply to more than 8,000, but the number of openings stayed below 2,000. After that, the number of shops that closed started to decrease between 2013 and 2016, falling to under 4,000. At the same time, the number of new openings increased and reached over 3,000 in 2016.
However, in 2017, the figure for closed shops went up again to just over 4,000, while openings dropped to around 2,500. In 2018, the number of shutdowns stayed stable at about 4,000, and openings remained almost the same as in the previous year. It is also important to note that in 2014, the number of shops that closed and the number of new openings were nearly stable.
