The charts provide information about the changes in ocean pollutant levels over a 10-year period from 1997 to 2007.
Overall, air pollution accounted for the largest proportion of ocean pollutants throughout the period. Unlike other pollutant sources, air pollution remained stable over the given period, showing minimal fluctuation. By 2007, litter was no longer recorded as a notable source of ocean pollution.
It is clear that in 1997 and 2007 pollution from air represented the largest proportion of ocean pollutants in both years, standing at 30% and 29% respectively. In addition, domestic sewage, which stood at 18% in 1997, equalized with air pollution levels by 2007.
Meanwhile, the proportion of offshore oil rose significantly, surging from 5% to 14% over the period. All other sources of pollution showed a downward trend throughout the decade.
Farm waste experienced a slight decline of 2% over the given period. In contrast, the amount of marine and industrial waste experienced a notable decrease. Marine pollution diminished by 5%, whereas industrial waste underwent a steeper decrease of 8% across the years.
