Overall, it is clear that the number of passengers grew slightly, even though there were some fluctuations. Meanwhile, the percentage of trains running on time changed throughout the period.
Focusing on the total number of train passengers, around 38 billion people travelled by train in 2000. This trend increased gradually to 43 billion in 2002 before declining in 2003. After that, there was moderate growth about 48 billion passengers in 2005. By 2009, this figure accounted for 46 billion people.
As for the proportion of trains running on time, train punctuality rate went up from 92% in 2000 to about 96% in 2004, while the target of 95% stayed constant during the period. After 2004, the rate of punctuality declined considerably to 92% before growing to 97% in 2008. Meanwhile, this figure levelled out around 97% until the century’s end.
